Atlantic Records Takeover : Anne-Marie and D/C

Thanks to everyone who came down to another fantastic Lounge Session at Jungle last Thurs. We were lucky enough to welcome Atlantic Records into the house, bringing with them Brixton-born pop/R&B artist and guest vocalist on the latest Rudimental album, Anne-Marie as well as R&B vocalist and South London Native, D/C.

D/C kicked things off with a handful of unreleased beauties; with a set up of just keyboard and the lushest of vocals. If you haven’t already have a listen to latest single, Longing For You.

Next up was the mesmerising Anne-Marie, fresh from her appearance at the #‎Brits2016. WHAT A VOICE. Anne-Marie spoilt us with a number of her newest tunes, and it’s safe to say the audience was won over by her charm. It was a privilege to have her perform for us before heading off to Glasgow to begin her tour with Rudimental. You will have heard her stunning vocals on ‘Rumour Mill’ w/ Rudimental but we urge you to seek out more of her solo material. ‘Do It Right’ is one of our favourites. Can't wait to hear more from her!

Aquilo and Whilk & Misky : Island Records Takeover

At Native HQ we have just about recovered from last week’s Island Records Takeover. What a night.

Last Thursday we were honoured to welcome both Aquilo and Whilk & Misky into our home, Jungle Studios. It was a fantastic turnout and people arrived early in anticipation. Drinks and sushi were on tap.

Aquilo were up first, and what a way to warm up the crowd. Aquilo are a musical duo from Silverdale, Lancashire: Tom Hingham and Ben Fletcher. We had the chance to speak to the guys before their performance and asked for them to describe their sound. They put it simply, ‘we’re two northern lads who write sad songs’.

Arriving fresh faced and with an incredibly clear musical aesthetic, Tom’s angelic lead vocals soar and when Ben joins in, their harmonies are hypnotising. You could hear a pin drop when the opening of 2014 single 'Losing You’ played out - definitely a personal favourite of ours.

If you are a fan of SOHN, London Grammar, old-school Blue Nile or any other band in the ‘mellow’ category, you will love Aquilo.

Second up were London duo Whilk & Misky. Nima and Charlie - AKA Whilk & Misky - have been quietly working on their sound for the past two years, and their love for both soul and electronica makes for an almost totally unique, intelligent sound.

Charlie’s growling vocals (and devilish good-looks ;) had the crowd transfixed, and they couldn’t help but move their feet when Spanish-influenced, upbeat number ‘Clap Your Hands’ was played. Whilk & Misky delivered a hugely exciting, energy-filled performance that set us up beautifully for our move onto the roof terrace to continue the party.

Jungle’s very own resident DJ’s Joe Skinner, Jim Griffin and Stuart Allen-Hynd took over from here and kept the party vibe-ing with the perfect mix of Reggae sounds and House beats until the early hours.

Thanks so much to all who came along, and a huge thank you to Island Records for helping to make it happen. We can’t wait until the next!

Native Lounge Sessions go to Cannes!

This year's Cannes Lions sure was a busy one for the Native crew. We decided to take our increasingly popular, Lounge Sessions (usually hosted at Jungle Studios in London) to the beach.

With live music during Happy Hour on Wed, Thurs and Fri and the co-sponsorship of the Hanging Gardens (free massages/oxygen and phone charging) with our friends at Jungle Studios - there was plenty to transport, build/dismantle and co-ordinate.

It was a fantastic week with awesome music and lots of new friends made. For those who missed it, or even for those who were there but looking for an escape from the Post-Cannes Monday blues, here’s a little round-up of events.

Bondax at Native Lounge Sessions, Cannes

Bondax are an electronic music duo who gained prominence primarily as a result of BBC Radio, initially through BBC Introducing before receiving BBC Radio 1 airtime from a range of DJs including Nick Grimshaw and Annie Mac. When we heard they could fit Cannes into their diary we knew they had to join us.

They kick-started the Native Lounge Sessions in Cannes on Wed 24th with a DJ set mixing funk, soul and house tracks - perfectly soundtracking a scorching summer’s day on the French Riviera.

Within a few minutes of the beat dropping, creatives from around the world were up on their feet, unwilling to resist the temptation to move along - rosé in hand, toes in the sand.

Our thanks to Universal Publishing for helping to get the band involved.

Kiko Bun at Native Lounge Sessions, Cannes

Signed to Island Records, Kiko Bun is one of Britain’s most hotly tipped new reggae stars, and is based in Peckham, London. On Thurs 25th, fresh from supporting The Wailers on their UK tour, Kiko flew into Cannes to be part of the Native Lounge Sessions. With an effortless voice reminiscent of the reggae greats - Kiko offered up a set covering all of his new and most popular tracks. A definite highlight for us was Kiko’s performance of brand new single ‘Where I’m From’.

The brilliant single was released on June 15th (2015) and mixes Kiko’s deep love of Jamaican roots music with crisp young London bass culture and is an instantly memorable summer boom box anthem:

Blink and you could’ve missed him though - as Kiko and co were only in Cannes for a couple of hours, flying back to the UK straight after the performance for a gig at Glastonbury. It’s a summer packed full of festival slots for Kiko with Lovebox, Secret Garden Party, Reading and many more on the schedule for this year. Definitely a new favourite of ours and one to watch.

Thanks to Island Records for arranging for Kiko to join us.

We Were Evergreen at Native Lounge Sessions, Cannes

French alternative indie-electro-pop trio, We Were Evergreen were up next and raised the bar at the Native Lounge Sessions with the intricacies of their live instrument set up. Formed in 2008 in Paris by then-literature-students Michael Liot (vocals, strummed instruments) and Fabienne Débarre (vocals, keyboards, xylophone) and with the line up completed by William Serfass (vocals, percussions, bass, electric guitar), We Were Evergreen released two self-produced EPs (We Were Evergreen, Flings) in France before moving to London where they released a third EP, Leeway. Since then, they released their debut album ’Towards’  through Island Records and have toured with the likes of Metronomy, Goldfrapp, Slow Club, King Charles, Michael Kiwanuka and Villagers.

The crowd was enchanted by their gorgeous harmonies, that drifted on the sea air – soothing hangovers across the beach. Free albums went in the blink of an eye, and We Were Evergreen thoroughly charmed all around them.

Massive thanks to Imagem for their part in getting We Were Evergreen to Cannes.

We are well and truly knackered. Now, where’s my bed.

Native Music Lounge Sessions at LBB and Friends Beach

We've got some incredible acts lined up, and music is on during happy hour - when drinks are free! RSVP to hello@nativemusicsoho.co.uk.

Native Lounge Session: Lianne La Havas

Native Lounge Session: Lianne La Havas

Last week’s Lounge Session really was something special.

For those of you who missed it, we were lucky enough to experience the incredibly talented and mesmerising Lianne La Havas perform two live sets in the intimate settings of the RKCR/Y&R boardroom and then onto our home, Jungle Studios.

Offering a mostly acoustic and hushed hybrid of alternative folk and soul, Lianne was born in London, to a Greek father and Jamaican mother. She began singing at seven, and cites her parents’ diverse musical tastes as having the biggest influence on her music. Her mother played with Jill Scott and Mary J. Blige, and her father, an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, taught her the basics of guitar and piano.

After a totally unplugged set at RKCR/Y&R, Lianne and crew headed over to Jungle Studios where they prepped for set two. After a quick sound check (which gave the guests time to pop to the roof terrace for a few glasses of bubbles) Lianne began with her latest single Unstoppable, a love song La Havas recently debuted on Later… With Jools Holland, a programme that was one of the original springboards for her career. She then spent the next half hour weaving between old and new works, all the while holding a totally captivated audience (lots of oohs, ahhs and gasps). All-in-all a totally flawless and touching performance.

As soon as the set came to a close, Lianne and audience took advantage of the wonderful weather and relocated back to the roof terrace where we were entertained by Jim Griffin from Jungle on decks!

La Havas’s second album, Blood is due out at the end of July so make sure you check it out. We’ve got so much exciting Lounge Session music planned over the next few months so make sure you keep an eye out for news and updates.

Abdominal & The Obliques

What a session. We were treated to incredible chilled acoustic hip hop from Abdominal. Check out this clip:

Native Lounge Session: Laura Doggett

Last week we were graced, and we don't use that word lightly, by the presence of Laura Doggett. Our thanks to Sony ATV for arranging to bring her in.

Our first stop was at RKCR/Y&R for a Tea Room Session, which we curate. And Laura sung to the room and captivated the audience. Sessions like these are always interesting as you see the artist go from arriving, and wondering what on earth they are in for, to being greeted by the warmth and gratitude of the agency - and leaving on a high.

We then jumped into a car and headed to Jungle Studios, our home and the venue for our own showcases - Lounge Sessions.

Laura (and Mark on keys), then wowed the packed room, with her incredible voice and strength of songs. The depth and weight of Laura's songs are counter-balanced by her light and playful personality that came across so well in between. The intimate environment always makes these showcases special occasions, but this one even more so. You could feel the connection between artist and audience from the outset. Watch a tiny clip here:

Everyone stuck around for drinks and food, and Laura hung out with us all for a while too. Nobody really wanted to go home. It was a special showcase, that we will remember for a long time.

Don't miss the next one - it's big.

Lounge Session: Billy Bragg

Lounge Sessions: We Were Evergeen

WOW. A packed Lounge Session, and deservedly so. We Were Evergreen cast their spell over us from the first to last song. Then we all headed to the roof terrace for beers. It wasn't a bad day at the office. Thanks to the band for making so many people's day, and great luck with the tour.

Lounge Session: The Shires

An incredible duo from the UK who are wrapped in the American sound of country. They sing about British stuff (weather, fish and chips, tea!!!), but with an American inspired sound. Check them out - they are brilliant.

Lounge Session: Kimberly Anne

It's official  - we love Kimberly Anne, great songs, wicked voice and a reet good laugh. Another great Lounge Session.

Lounge Session: Hudson Taylor

Hudson Taylor are a duo we reckon you're going to hear a lot about over the next few years - a pair of young, Irish, uber-talented and charming brothers - thanks for coming to play our Lounge Sessions.

Lounge Session: The Pierces

Two of the coolest LA gals you could care to meet. Thanks to Allison and Catherine for play at our little showcase. Amazing vocals!

Lounge Session: George Ezra

Back in February we met a young guy called George Ezra. We did a couple of showcases with him, and although it was just his voice and guitar - his performance had everyone silenced and drawn in.

Fast forward a few months and, naturally, he has blown up all over the place. Nice one George and thanks for coming to play our little showcases.

Lounge Session: Lucius

The first of our Lounge Sessions kicked of in spectacular style with the wonderful Lucius, who were over in the UK to promote their forthcoming album. The harmonies and songs were outstanding and the Lounge at Jungle Studios was packed out... look out for future sessions. Email hello@native-jungle.co.uk to be on the mailing list.

Lounge Session: Nothing But Thieves

Another brilliant Lounge Session, thanks to Nothing But Thieves for giving everyone a few goosebumps - spellbinding vocals. Great guys too.
